Description
Summary of role
De Sering is busier than ever. More guests, events, catering, and events of all kinds, including a growing nightlife programme. We are looking for someone experienced to help bring the bar and front of house to a new level, and to help support our location manager, in improving De Sering West in general.
Did you make your years on the floor but are done with tyrannical businesses? Do you want to contribute to a great cause, and feel like your work matters? Do you love cultural spaces, restaurants and service in general? Are you idealistic as well? Then we have the job for you!
What is De Sering?
De Sering west is a community kitchen, public space and activist kitchen in Amsterdam-West. We serve thousands of meals per week at prices so cheap that it's cheaper than most can cook at home. We run two Sering locations now, Sering West, and Sering Centraal. Alongside that and within our organisation, we also run TestTafel, an experimental plant-based restaurant that helps fund the rest of it, and advocates for a slow food systems.
Requirements and Expectations
What will you do?
Here, you will thrive with:
- Creative freedom and input: Within the De Sering team, you can spend time on aspects of personal interest. This can be the local beer list, special cocktails, additions to our homemade drinks menu, or even a sweet treat to serve behind the bar. We are constantly looking for improvements; experimentation is at the heart of what we do. Thus, your vision to help us grow is more than welcome.
- A non-toxic and egalitarian team: We try to build the best possible balance between effectiveness and egalitarianism. What we absolutely do not do is shout, throw plates or tolerate any form of disrespect, which is still too common in restaurants.
- A job where you know you contribute something good: We know it's rare to find work that feels important to the world and the people around you, so we created that for our workers. De Sering is a home for many people, a critical resource for many more. You help daily by being part of De Sering and consequently helping us care for our community and reach more people.
What we are looking for:
- Experience: While enthusiasm counts for a lot at De Sering, the work for the staff can be high-volume and intense. Experience in clubs or big bars is therefore appreciated. It is not mostly about technical bartending skills, but keeping cool under stress and being able to find joy in a busy service.
- Someone who can work independently: To make De Sering work for the affordable prices we have established, we can't afford to have a large crew on the floor at any time. We ask that you can take initiative, find solutions, and can take the lead, especially when working with our volunteers.
- Willingness to learn and be flexible: Because we are often with a small team, it's important that we can support each other. De Sering works best when cooks can take a drink order, and the front of house can clean a kitchen. You must be willing to try something new to make it work day-to-day.
- Someone who takes hospitality and what we do seriously: Just because the food is so affordable doesn't mean great hospitality is not of value to us; quite the opposite. We are constrained by budget and time, but want to welcome every person, no matter their background, who comes to benefit from our space in one way or another (for free, for a meal or an event).
- Someone who can teach: Half of this job is teaching both volunteers and staff on the job.
This is not a part-time job to do besides your studies or other jobs. It is an investment of your time and effort to support our mission of rebuilding community through food.
